Lorenzo Pellegrini has reportedly signed a contract extension with Roma, so Tottenham won’t be able to sign him either on a free transfer or by paying his release clause.

Tottenham director Fabio Paratici is a long time admirer of Pellegrini having already tried to sign him from Sassuolo during his time at Juventus.

During the summer, the North London side opened talks with Roma and the player’s entourage, but the Giallorossi did not want to sell their captain unless his €30m release clause was matched.

Pellegrini’s contract is due to expire in the summer, but according to multiple reports in Italy, he’s now reached an agreement to extend his stay at the club until 2026.

Il Messaggero and Calciomercato.com report the Giallorossi have cancelled Pellegrini’s release clause, so if Spurs are still interested in the midfielder at the end of the season, they’ll have to negotiate a transfer fee with Roma.

José Mourinho’s side will announce Pellegrini’s contract extension in the coming days.

The Italian midfielder will see his salary rise to €4m-a-year, becoming Giallorossi’s highest earner after Tammy Abraham.

Many Serie A stars have their contracts expiring in June, including Lorenzo Insigne, Paulo Dybala, Franck Kessié and Andrea Belotti.

2 thought on “What Pellegrini’s Roma contract extension means for Tottenham”
  1. If Serie A wants to be taken seriously again, then it need to keep it’s best young players. If they want to save money, quit buying up has-beens from the epl and putting them on huge salaries.

  2. Serie A owners are all losing money. Therefore they buy cheap players from South America, Africa, and Easter Europe.

    Why?

Because Italian players actually cost more money even if they are mediocre.

We now have teams with almost all foreigners and 3 Italians on the team. Those 3 Italians are usually “good” players and cost a lot of money.

Back in the 80s and early 90s it used to be almost the whole team was Italian and instead you had 3 foreigners who were often the best and most expensive. Obviously that model is far superior but funny how things have changed
