Associazione Sportiva Roma was founded in the summer of 1927, on the back of a merger of three sports clubs based in the capital. Alba-Audace, Football Club di Roma and Fortitudo-Pro Roma united under one banner, with Lazio the only major Roman club to oppose a merger designed to allow the capital to compete with the dominant clubs from Northern Italy.
Italo Foschi was named AS Roma’s first president, with the club adopting the Capitoline Wolf symbol for its crest, along with the colours loved by Rome’s old districts and suburbs, yellow and red. The new club quickly rose to prominence and on the back of significant signings such as Attilio Ferraris and Fulvio Bernardini, Roma finished as runners-up in Serie A in 1931.
It would take another 11 years for the club to land its first Scudetto, as Roma won their maiden Serie A title in 1942 under the management of Alfred Schaeffer. Striker Amedeo Amadei was a key figure, as Roma became the first team not based in the north to claim the Scudetto. However, the triumph wasn’t the springboard to success expected, with a lengthy lean period in the years that followed.
Roma were relegated to Serie B in 1951, although that remains their only relegation to date. The Giallorossi won the second tier at the first time of asking and became a force once again in the top flight. They competed in European competition, winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961, but they wouldn’t land the Serie A title again until 1983. Since then, there has only been one more title triumph, in 2001, although Roma have won the Coppa Italia on nine occasions - most recently in 2008. The club came agonisingly close to continental glory in 1984, losing the European Cup final on penalties to English side Liverpool.
The Stadio Olimpico has been the Giallorossi’s home since 1953, which the club shares with bitter rivals Lazio. Before that, Roma spent one year at the Motovelodromo Appio, before spells at Campo Testaccio and the Stadio Nazionale del PNF. There were plans for a new stadium, given the working title of the Stadio della Roma, but they were shelved in February 2021 following a series of setbacks and delays.
The Roma kit has always been yellow and red, which is the English translation for Giallorossi. There have been plenty of memorable Roma kits over the years, with the dark shade of red recognised around the world when combined with the dark shade of yellow. Any new Roma kit is eagerly anticipated, as fans wait to find out how their iconic colours will translate into a modern take on their strip. Roma launched their Hall of Fame in 2012 and it’s packed with standout names. From early trailblazers such as Ferraris, Bernardini and Amadeo Amadei, to icons of the 1983 title-winning side including Falcao, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Pruzzo, the likes of Giacomo Losi, Giuseppe Giannini, Sergio Santarini and Bruno Conti all go down as legends of the club. Likewise Brazilian duo Aldair and Cafu, German Rudi Voller and Frenchman Vincent Candela, as well as Argentine hero Gabriel Batistuta, whose signing was the catalyst for the 2001 title victory.
Daniele De Rossi may have narrowly missed out on that title triumph, but the born and bred Roman goes down in history as one of the club’s greatest ever players. The title of greatest ever though undoubtedly goes to Francesco Totti. Another Rome native and a one-club man, he made a record 786 appearances for Roma, scoring 307 goals across his remarkable 25-year career in yellow and red. As well as the 2001 Scudetto, Totti won both the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana twice, along with the 2006 World Cup with Italy.
Jose Mourinho became Roma’s 69th managerial appointment when he took over at the Stadio Olimpico at the start of the 2021-22 Serie A season. The first was Englishman William Garbutt, who was one of four foreigners who were among the first five Roma trainers. The fifth foreigner, Hungarian Alfred Schaffer, led the Giallorossi to their first ever title in 1942.
Some 41 years later, former Sweden international and Milan player Nils Liedholm would coach Roma to their second Scudetto, along with three Coppa Italia titles. Fabio Capello became the first Italian to win Serie A with Roma in 2001, with other notable coaches including the Coppa Italia-winning Sven-Goran Eriksson and Luciano Spalletti, who successfully defended the cup by winning it in both 2007 and 2008.
Roma’s intense rivalry with Lazio goes all the way back to the day they were born, with the Biancocelesti turning down the merger with the rest of the major capital clubs. The Derby della Capitale is one of the most passionate rivalries in world football, and also one of the most keenly-anticipated Serie A fixtures each season.
The Derby del Sole, which has also been referred to at the Derby del Sud, is the name given to fixtures between Roma and Napoli. As two of the most popular clubs outside Northern Italy, this is an old rivalry and another game to look out for. Likewise matches between Roma and Juventus, with La Lupa supporters taking a dislike to the Old Lady, while also perpetuating rivalries with Milan and Atalanta too.
