The Italian sports pages agree match official Daniele Orsato made ‘a mistake’ by blowing his whistle too soon but claimed Roma striker Tammy Abraham’s goal in the 1-0 defeat to Juventus ‘would have been disallowed anyway’.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports on the complex case of the penalty decision for Roma, before Jordan Veretout missed the decisive spot kick minutes ahead of the interval.

Juventus picked up a 1-0 win over Roma on Sunday and Orsato was again at the centre of attention due to a decision before half-time.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims ‘there’s no question of Orsato’s mistake, as he blew the whistle too soon, denying the Giallorossi an advantage’.

Orsato went against guidelines on Juventus vs. Roma penalty

His assistant then waved for offside without waiting, but the newspaper points at the ‘voluntary hands’ of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who fell on the ball and gave Abraham the assist.

If Orsato had given the advantage, ‘Abraham’s goal would have been cancelled anyway’.

Tuttosport agrees with La Gazzetta dello Sport and claims the referee makes a mistake when he explains to Bryan Cristante that the ‘advantage is never given on a penalty’.

But the Turin based paper also points at the possible intervention of VAR, who would almost certainly ‘disallow the goal’.

Juventus vs. Roma | Orsato: ‘You blame me because he missed the penalty?’

Il Corriere dello Sport is a bit tougher with Orsato, claiming the ‘crazy mistake’ was probably ‘the worst in recent years’.

The newspaper says the penalty decision was ‘an error that cannot belong to whoever is considered the best Italian referee’.
