Referee Daniele Orsato went against the guidelines by blowing the whistle too early for a Roma penalty, therefore denying a Tammy Abraham goal, and Wojciech Szczesny then saved the spot-kick.

The incident occurred just before half-time at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin, with Juve 1-0 up through Moise Kean.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was brought down by Szczesny in the six-yard box and a couple of seconds later, Abraham put the rebound into the net.

However, Orsato had already blown the whistle to award a penalty, so the goal could not be allowed to stand.

Instead, Jordan Veretout stepped up for the spot-kick and for the first time after 13 consecutive conversions for Roma, he failed to score, denied by Szczesny.

The controversy will continue to rage, because with VAR, referees and linesmen are urged to hold off on blowing the whistle until the move has completed.

Had Orsato followed those guidelines, Abraham’s goal would’ve stood.

He did not play the advantage for just that couple of seconds, infuriating the Giallorossi and coach Jose Mourinho.

4 thought on “Orsato went against guidelines on Juventus vs. Roma penalty”
  1. Goal couldn’t have stood as Mkhitaryan assisted with his hand.

And the penalty was blown early because every referee is against Juventus by default just so they won’t be named in any match-fixing scandal.

    Juve won, live with it.

  2. By blowing the whistle, Orsato ensured that the handball wouldn’t stand and probably sought to “bypass” that giving roma a penalty instead. Great deal actually… commit a foul and get a penalty instead. Sheesh.
