Hellas Verona coach Igor Tudor explains why his idea of football is not suitable for big clubs: ‘I wouldn’t propose it to someone like Cristiano Ronaldo.’

After Di Francesco’s sacking, the former Croatian defender took over at Hellas Verona and collected 16 points in nine games.

The Gialloblu beat Lazio, Roma and Juventus, picked up a draw against Napoli, and threw a two-goal lead away against Milan, eventually losing 3-2.

They are one of the surprises in Serie A so far and they’ve evolved under their new coach after collecting three defeats in a row under Di Francesco at the beginning of the season.

Tudor explained his idea of football in a post-match interview with DAZN following his side’s 1-1 draw against Napoli at the Stadio Maradona.

“It would be difficult to use our training methods in a top team,” Tudor said.

Verona adopt man to man marking all over the pitch, something similar to what Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta have been doing over the last few years.

“Perhaps, we could find a compromise by attacking and doing more zonal marking. It’s a bit sick, in a good way. Surely, you can’t propose something like this to a player like Cristiano Ronaldo,” Tudor admitted.

“However, football evolves and a coach must do the same, making wise use of both phases.”

Oddly, Tudor and Cristiano Ronaldo worked together at Juventus last season when Tudor was Andrea Pirlo’s assistant coach.

  1. Tudor doing a great job. The way there playing makes it very difficult for any opponent. Verona is tough and can not be taken lightly. He proves that great defense can be successful in today’s game and is an essential part of winning football.

  2. Good for You Tudor ! besides, it seems that only Zidane can coach cr7 anyways but then again he’s also a soccer genius !

  3. Ha! I was been a bit cheeky on the liveblog t’other night when I proposed that Verona‘s style was what Andrea/Igor had in mind for Juve? Before it dawned that Cristiano + the Juve midfield c(w)ouldn’t run? But it seem’s it had merit after all. Verona defend from the front + press like fire. But they can also drop off + be effective + still pose a threat on the break. Simeone is on fire too but Barak is a great little runner + carrier with the ball. He look’s languid but he sure is a real good player!
