Milan were founded in December 1899 by the first English footballer to play abroad, a man called Herbert Kilpin, along with fellow Englishman Alfred Edwards. Upon establishing Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club, Kilpin said: “We will be a team of devils. Our colours will be red like fire and black to invoke fear in our opponents!” This is the origin of the ‘Il Diavolo‘ nickname, and why Milan are known as the Rossoneri.
The new club certainly proved devilish for their opponents, as Milan won the national championship less than a year and a half later. That was the first time the Rossoneri became champions of Italy, with 17 more to follow in the years since. There were two more early triumphs in 1906 and 1907, although there was a 44-year gap to their next success in 1951.
The title drought can in part be explained by the split which happened in 1908. Amid disagreements over signing foreign players, a splinter club was formed, Football Club Internazionale. Although the two clubs share a stadium to this day, a bitter animosity has always remained between Milan and Inter.
That stadium is of course the iconic San Siro, which opened as the Nuovo Stadio Calcistico San Siro back in 1926. Milan would be sole occupiers for more than 20 years, before Inter joined them in 1947. The stadium was renamed as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in 1980, after one of the most famous Milanese footballers to grace the game. The Rossoneri, meanwhile, changed their name to Associazione Calcio Milan some four decades prior to that, in 1939. This is where the shortened AC Milan comes from.
In addition to their 18 Serie A titles, Milan have won the Coppa Italia five times and are the most successful Italian club in Europe. The Rossoneri have won the Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup, on seven occasions. That’s second to only Real Madrid. Il Diavolo have also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup twice, the European Super Cup five times, the Supercoppa Italiana seven times and the Intercontinental Cup three times, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007.
The Milan kit has always featured red and black stripes, as per the early vision of their founder. Rossoneri literally translates as red blacks from Italian to English, giving the Serie A giants one of the most recognisable shirts in world football. The new Milan kit is always eagerly anticipated, with fans keen to discover the latest take on the iconic strip. If you’re looking for the latest Milan kit release, you’re in the right place.
Some of the finest footballers to ever play the game have turned out for Milan. Italy legend Paolo Maldini is arguably their greatest ever player, with the one-club Milanese the Rossoneri’s record appearance maker having played 902 times across his 25-year career at San Siro. Other world-class defenders have included Franco Baresi, Marcel Desailly and Alessandro Nesta, while the likes of Roberto Donadoni and Gianni Rivera operated further up the pitch. Famous strikers to don the red and black include Jose Altafini, George Weah, Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi.
From Dutch superstars Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten to the Swedish trio of Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm known as Gre-No-Li, Nordahl is Milan’s top scorer with 221 goals from 268 games. More modern Rossoneri greats include the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the star turn at present in his second spell at the club. Defender Alessio Romagnoli is the Milan captain, while Ivorian Franck Kessie is one of the current team’s standout performers.
Founder Herbert Kilpin was the first Milan coach, assuming the role from 1900 to 1908. Arrigo Sacchi is widely regarded as the greatest ever Milan coach, putting together one of the finest sides ever seen in football. The Italian only won Serie A once, in 1988, but secured back-to-back European Cups in the following two seasons under the ownership of Silvio Berlusconi. His team included the likes of Maldini, Baresi, Donadoni, Rijkaard, Gullit and Van Basten, as well as Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti and Carlo Ancelotti.
Nereo Rocco goes down in history as the first Milan coach to win the European Cup in 1963, before repeating the feat in 1969 during the second of his three spells in charge of the club. He also won Serie A twice and the Coppa Italia three times, as well as the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup on two occasions. Former player Fabio Capello guided the Rossoneri to their first success of the Champions League era in 1994, while another former player, Ancelotti, conquered Europe twice in 2003 and 2007. The current Milan coach is Stefano Pioli, having taken over in October 2019.
Milan’s acrimonious rivalry with Inter stretches back for more than a century, with the two clubs contesting the Derby di Milano - Milan Derby - each season. The game is also known as the Derby della Madonnina, after the statue of the Virgin Mary which stands atop the city’s cathedral, the Duomo di Milano. The likes of Giueseppe Meazza, Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo have played for both Milan clubs, along with Ibrahimovic and Hakan Calhanoglu, who left Milan for Inter this summer.
In addition to their local rivals, Milan also have a long-standing foe in the form of Juventus. As two of Italy’s biggest clubs, Milan fixtures against Juve are always hotly contested and often crucial in the Serie A title race. The Rossoneri also have simmering rivalries with Napoli and Roma, as well as with Genoa.
