“The Roma we saw in Ukraine was at times unexpected,” the club legend told Mediaset Premium after that 2-1 Champions League defeat.

“The first half was extraordinary and the second was unworthy of Roma. We needed to get a result, unfortunately leave with a defeat, but are still very much in the running. We want to get back to being the side we saw in that first half, which is the Roma we all want to see.”

This evening Edin Dzeko is rested in favour of summer signing Schick as the centre-forward.

“Schick is an extraordinary player, we hope he can prove it tonight. He is fundamental for this group, we worked hard to tear him away from Juventus. We really believe in him.

“The Coach made the decision to start him this evening. Edin has always played, so he needs a bit of rest too. I think Schick is a very good centre-forward and we can make the most of his characteristics.

“Radja Nainggolan isn’t very sharp at the moment, but then people always expect top performances from him. He remains an extraordinary player, the Coach is relying on him and we’re very happy to have him in the side.”

Totti gave a rare pre-match interview as a representative of Roma’s directorial staff, but admits he’s still getting used to it.

“When I’m sitting in the stands, of course I’d like to go down there and play. It’s still fresh, after all, but that’s normal.”
