Inter have lost three of their first seven Serie A matches this season, something that proved disastrous the last three times it occurred.

The Nerazzurri’s campaign has kicked off incredibly inconsistently, with wins over Torino, Spezia and Cremonese contrasting with losses to Lazio, Milan and now Udinese. Things are no different in Europe as the Nerazzurri lost their Champions League opener to Bayern Munich but secured all three points against Viktoria Plzen.

As highlighted by OptaPaolo, Inter have lost three of their opening seven league games three times before in the three-point era, back in the 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2011-12 seasons. In all three of these campaigns, the team failed to finish in the top four, suggesting that Simone Inzaghi’s side could be in for a difficult year.

The international break has come at a good time for the Nerazzurri, who’ll now have to dig deep ahead of their next Serie A clashes against Roma and Sassuolo. In between those games they’ll face Barcelona, another must-win match.

  1. Unfortunately for Inter, they used money to become one of the top teams and that money isn’t their anymore so they need to start from scratch whilst the likes of AC Milan did the opposite, reduced their team salary and built the team up economically with great scouting.
