“It was not easy, because Roma have quality players and caused us problems in the second half, but we remained organised and solid,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia.
“I’ve always said the usual game for a Juventus goalkeeper is all about keeping your concentration, because you can do absolutely nothing for 90 minutes and be ready for a great save when called into action.
“Our defence has done a great job over the last few weeks, as we only allowed one big Inter chance and the Milan penalty. It’s good to know that our team is so well balanced.”
Coach Max Allegri said that Juventus were so sure they’d score against any opponent, especially now that Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived, that they need to focus mainly on remaining solid.
“I think Cristiano’s arrival has helped the team understand that if we do our job at the back, then something will happen upfront,” continued Szczesny.
“We’ve got forwards like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala who we know will create something. Therefore, if we remain solid at the back and don’t concede, we usually emerge with three points.
“After all, victory means scoring one more goal than the opposition, so 1-0 is worth the same as winning 7-0. It’s true we have a lot of 1-0 wins, but in my view that is the perfect football result. I’m a goalkeeper, so I’m happy if we don’t concede!”
The situation has not been quite so simple in the Champions League, where Juve lost to Manchester United and Young Boys, but still topped the group.
In the Round of 16, they’ll be up against Atletico Madrid, who have a fairly similar tactical approach in terms of focus on defence.
“We could’ve been luckier in the draw, but if we want to win the Champions League, we’ve got to beat the best in Europe. Atleti are in the Round of 16, we could have Real Madrid or Barcelona in the quarters or semi-finals, so we need to take everyone on.”
