Wojciech Szczęsny admits he lost €100 in a bet with Leo Messi during Poland-Argentina as the Juventus goalkeeper thought VAR would not award a penalty kick to the South Americans.

VAR took centre on Wednesday night, awarding a controversial penalty kick to Argentina against Poland. Szczesny flapped at a cross but caught Messi in the face after the Argentina international had already taken the header wide.

Argentina were given a penalty kick after an on-field review, and while the referee was making a decision, Szczesny made a bet with Messi.

“We spoke, and I bet €100 that it [VAR] would not have given the penalty,” Szczesny told TV 2.

“Therefore, I lost a bet with Messi. I don’t know if it’s allowed to bet at a World Cup, I’ll probably get banned for it, but I don’t care,” added the ex-Arsenal keeper with a laugh.

The 32-year-old eventually denied the PSG superstar from the spot, saving his second penalty kick in two games in Qatar.

Szczesny has become a specialist in saving penalty kicks. Last season, he denied three consecutive attempts from the spot for Juventus in games against Roma, both at the Allianz Stadium and at the Stadio Olimpico and against Sampdoria.
