Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti admits facing his first club Empoli is ‘like returning to university, the Oxford of Calcio.’

It kicks off at 14.00 UK time (13.00 GMT).

Spalletti made his coaching debut here in April 1994 as caretaker manager, then returned to take the main job in 1995.

“It’s like returning to university when you’re all grown up,” Spalletti told DAZN at the Stadio Castellani, where his management career began.

“In fact, Empoli is one of the best universities of Italian football, because it launched so many great players and coaches, even before I arrived. It is the Oxford University of Calcio.”

Others who passed through here include Maurizio Sarri and current coach Aurelio Andreazzoli, who was Spalletti’s assistant at Udinese and Roma.

“It’s exciting for me to return here. Other than the Magnificent Rector (President Fabrizio) Corsi, there are lecturers of every level here, including some who were my collaborators and I learned so much from, like Andreazzoli and Bianconi.

“We earned promotion to Serie A together.”
