Chris Smalling only has three months left on his contract with Roma but is edging closer to a new deal as Juventus and Inter watch on.

The 33-year-old English defender found a new lease of life with the Giallorossi after leaving Manchester United in August 2019, initially on loan before making the move permanent for €15m a year later.

Smalling has been one of Jose Mourinho’s most used players in the Italian capital this season, seeing 3210 minutes of action across 37 games for Roma, and the club don’t want to lose him on a free transfer in the summer.

Calciomercato.com highlights how a meeting occurred between Roma’s Tiago Pinto and Smalling’s agents earlier in March, where a new deal was discussed. Whilst no agreement was reached, things went well and both parties left feeling positive.

A new meeting will take place in the coming weeks, trying to close the gap between Roma’s offer of a one-year deal with an option for a second and Smalling’s requests of a two-year contract.

Juventus and Inter are keeping a close eye on the situation, interested in signing the Englishman on a free transfer, but for now the 33-year-old seems to be leaning towards renewing with the Giallorossi.
