Andriy Shevchenko is set to become the new coach of Serie A side Genoa after Davide Ballardini was fired, but what kind of tactician is the former Milan striker?

Ballardini was officially dismissed this afternoon and multiple sources report a deal has been agreed with Shevchenko.

The Grifone picked up three consecutive stalemates, but last night’s 2-2 draw with Empoli was not enough to rescue Ballardini.

Shevchenko has agreed to take over and it represents a return to Serie A for the former Milan striker, who wore the Rossoneri jersey from 1999-2006 and again in the 2008-09 season.

He retired at Dinamo Kiev in 2012 becoming assistant manager to Mykhaylo Fomenko on the Ukraine bench from February to July 2016, before his promotion to the senior role.

Sheva left in August 2021 after 52 competitive matches in charge of his country, in which he took them to UEFA EURO 2020.

He oversaw 25 victories, 13 draws and 14 defeats, in which Ukraine scored 71 goals and conceded 62.

Shevchenko’s primary tactic of choice is 4-3-3, but he has also used 3-4-1-2 and 3-5-2.

The latter would probably fit better with the current Genoa squad, as Ballardini used a three-man defence.

That too was variable even this season, as Genoa switched between 3-5-2 and 4-2-3-1 formations.
