As Sandro Tonali heads towards an extraordinary San Siro exit, Milan are already beginning to set their sights on a number of potential targets they could bring in using the cash generated from the imminent sale to Newcastle.

It is expected that the Rossoneri will receive upwards of €80m all included as compensation for the loss of Tonali, and whilst that may not cover the entirety of Milan’s summer spending plans, it certainly increases the club’s possibilities in the market.

As reported by numerous sources over the last 48 hours, Milan would be interested in making a move for Sassuolo’s Davide Frattesi to replace the outgoing Tonali, both of whom coincidentally share the same agent.

Frattesi is one of the most sought-after players within Serie A in the early stages of the summer, with rivals Inter, Juventus and Roma also having reported interest in the 23-year-old, who is currently valued at around €40m by Sassuolo

In terms of other midfield targets, Sky reported on Thursday afternoon that Tijjani Reijnders of AZ Alkmaar could be of interest to the Rossoneri.

The 24-year-old former youth international has spent the entirety of his domestic career playing in the Netherlands and has been tied to AZ since 2018, making 92 appearances for the club’s affiliated youth side, as well as a further 96 league appearances in the senior set-up.

Sky believes that a deal for Reijnders could be reached for a fee of around €18m plus bonuses.

Another area of Milan’s starting line-up in need of attention is the right-wing slot after Brahim Diaz’s return to parent club Real Madrid earlier in June.

Sky notes that US international Christian Pulisic is among the top candidates that Milan could bring in to fill that slot. Having fallen massively out of favour with Chelsea, his time at Stamford Bridge has almost certainly come to an end and his respectable numbers over the course of the last few seasons could make him an enticing option.

Another possibility for the same position is Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze, who has spent the entirety of his senior career on the books of LaLiga outfit Villarreal.

After a strong 2022-23 campaign, in which he made 37 league appearances for the Yellow Submarine, his price tag is thought to stand at €40m, although Sky report that Milan are hopeful of negotiating a discount on that figure.

Then there are the centre-forward options. On Wednesday, it was reported that Milan were leading the race to sign France international and soon-to-be free agent Marcus Thuram after the expiry of his contract with Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The son of former Serie A titan Lilian Thuram, and born in Parma, Thuram would make a welcome addition to Milan’s striking options, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic having called it a day on his playing career and Divock Origi thought to be on his way out.

Another opportunity in the free agent market comes in the form of Daichi Kamada, currently of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Japanese international will leave at the end of June.

Then, there are Thursday’s claims that Milan could make an audacious attempt to snatch Romelu Lukaku away from rivals Inter.

Initially reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, it is believed that Lukaku could be available on a permanent basis should any club decide to pay Chelsea a fee of €40m, which is thought to be too much for Inter. With big-money expected to come in for Tonali, Milan may well be in a position to be able to offer Chelsea the sort of fee they are looking for.
