Lazio took advantage of Roma and Atalanta’s frustrating draws by picking up all three points against Serie A strugglers Venezia.
The Biancocelesti came into this match only one point behind la Dea and the Giallorossi in the league table, so a win was vital if they wanted to keep up the pressure in the race for European qualification this season.
It was a slow start at the Stadio Olimpico, with neither side looking particularly dangerous in the first 30 minutes. Lazio slowly started to wake up as the first half drew to a close but it was 45 minutes to forget in the Italian capital, leaving both coaches frustrated on the sidelines.
Things were significantly more lively in the second half however, starting in the 49th minute. Lazio trio Ciro Immobile, Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic pulled off a lovely bit of passing play that finished with a curling Immobile shot into the far corner, but the team’s celebrations were cut short after a VAR check ruled it offside.
The Biancocelesti kept their heads up and in the 55th minute Luiz Felipe was given a fairly soft penalty after a collision with the high boot of Domen Črnigoj in the penalty area. Lazio were awarded a penalty and Immobile made no mistake from 12 yards, putting his team 1-0 up and breaking Silvio Piola’s all time top scorer record in Serie A with the club.
Lazio kept up the pressure after taking the lead but Venezia did well to limit the damage, stopping the Roman club’s attacks time after time.
The Biancocelesti comfortably controlled the remainder of the match, lightly pushing for a second but focusing mostly on keeping yet another clean sheet.
