It was a dramatic finale in Turin, as Juventus had two goals disallowed before Napoli snatched the winner in stoppages with Giacomo Raspadori’s volley.
The Bianconeri had quite a week, qualifying for the Europa League semi-finals and finding out their appeal against the 15-point Serie A penalty was partially accepted, pushing it on to another trial. It immediately propelled them into third place behind Lazio, but focus was also on the upcoming Coppa Italia semi-final with Inter. Moise Kean and Kaio Jorge were injured, while the Partenopei missed Matteo Politano, Mario Rui and Giovanni Simeone after the Champions League quarter-final exit to Milan.
Juan Cuadrado stung Alex Meret’s gloves and Tanguy Ndombele fired over in a frantic opening to the match, while Adrien Rabiot flashed a ball across the face of goal with nobody to meet it and Filip Kostic misplaced the assist to send Arkadiusz Milik clear.
Wojciech Szczesny was right behind a Kvicha Kvaratskhelia free kick from a tricky angle. Nobody was happy with the referee, as Federico Gatti ran a risk when catching the Georgian on the side of the head and Juan Jesus avoided a yellow card for bringing down Milik on the counter.
Kvaratskhelia had Napoli’s first shot on target after the restart and Manuel Locatelli flung himself in the path of Ndombele to deflect over the bar, then Kvara fired over from the edge of the box after Victor Osimhen robbed Locatelli.
Eljif Elmas combined with Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s flying back-heel flick to set up Osimhen for a finish deflected inches wide and from the resulting corner the Capocannoniere’s header was straight at Szczesny.
Osimhen threatened again, firing over the bar after running onto another inspired Di Lorenzo assist, while Milik failed to make the most of Nicolò Fagioli winning back the ball with his high press.
Juventus had the ball in the net on 82 minutes with Angel Di Maria’s counter-attack deflected off Juan Jesus. However, it was disallowed following a VAR review for Milik’s foul on Stanislav Lobotka in the build-up.
The Bianconeri scored again at the 90th, but Federico Chiesa had pulled the ball out of play at the by-line before assisting Dusan Vlahovic for the tap-in.
The drama continued, as moments later Napoli took the lead when Eljif Elmas crossed for Giacomo Raspadori unmarked at the back post and he shaped up for the perfect volley, firing it through Szczesny’s legs.
