Gianluca Caprari’s penalty cancelled out a Krzysztof Piatek opener, but Fiorentina were made to rue two extraordinary Lucas Torreira misses.

These teams were only two points apart, both still within reach of the European places, while the Viola were still furious after losing the Coppa Italia semi-final midweek to Juventus with a last-gasp unlucky Lorenzo Venuti own goal.

Nikola Milenkovic returned from suspension, with Jack Bonaventura beginning his two-match ban, plus Alvaro Odriozola and Matija Nastasic injured. Hellas had Koray Gunter and Nicolò Casale back, but Antonin Barak joined Retsos, Pawel Dawidowicz and Cancellieri on the treatment table.

There were banners in the stands marking four years since the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

Fiorentina took the lead when Jonathan Ikone ran onto a long Pietro Terracciano clearance, his shot took two deflections, turning into an accidental assist for Krzysztof Piatek to fire in on the spin from 10 yards with his right boot.

However, Hellas Verona received a penalty when Nikola Milenkovic was late on a clearance, only kicking Kevin Lasagna. Gianluca Caprari hit the spot-kick straight down the middle, trusting Terracciano would dive out of the way.

Giovanni Simeone flung himself at the Caprari cross from the left, unable to connect in the six-yard box, then Lasagna somehow failed to score when one-on-one with Terracciano after the offside trap failed.

Lucas Torreira nodded a Cristiano Biraghi cross wide, but he made an extraordinary error on 55 minutes, sneaking up undisturbed to meet the Jose Callejon cross and somehow firing over from six yards.

Piatek volleyed another Biraghi cross wide, but Torreira again failed to convert from point-blank range, this time sliding in on a Riccardo Sottil cross from the left.

Callejon’s free kick burst the wall and was beaten away by Lorenzo Montipò, but the two teams could not be separated.
