Jannik Sinner has become the first male Italian tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament in 48 years and Italian football personalities and clubs have been congratulating the 22-year-old on social media.

Milan were among the first ones to praise the tennis star on winning the Australian Open on Sunday. Sinner, 22, is a die-hard Rossoneri fan and was seen at San Siro this past November for a Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

He had helped Italy win the Davis Cup only a few days earlier, and the whole crowd at San Siro chanted for him prior to the game.

Juventus, Roma and Inter also congratulated Sinner on social media on Sunday. Lega Serie A posted a carrot on X, formerly Twitter, which famously symbolises the Italian tennis player.

Many football personalities in the Peninsula followed Sinner’s Final against the Russian Daniil Medvedev on Sunday, including Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Sassuolo and Italy star Domenico Berardi, who is not available for today’s game against Monza due to a knee injury, which will force him to the sidelines for over a month.

Sinner had recovered from two sets down, so Berardi and others like him were impressed by his mentality: ‘Phenomenon, never give up,’ wrote the Sassuolo star.
