Former Milan midfielder Dejan Savicevic had high praise for Stefano Pioli but was less impressed with Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Roma are working on strengthening their squad this summer as they look to provide Jose Mourinho with the right players to close the gap to the top teams. Milan only won the Scudetto by two points last campaign and they’ll be hoping for a more comfortable cushion in the upcoming season.

Speaking to SportWeek, Savicevic first gave his thoughts about Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

“I remember the player a little, he was a slow midfielder. The coach, on the other hand, is a superstar, he understands football and players, he has won many titles and will win more.”

He confirmed that he’s still a fan of the Rossoneri after all these years.

“Oh, yes. You can’t forget. I am president of the FA of Montenegro and a Milan fan. But a little less than my son Vlado.

“You know, he is part of the Milan Club Podgorica, he went to Reggio Emilia for the party, in the Curva. He took pictures and put them on Facebook as well. I saw it on TV, it gave me great joy.”

He had incredibly high praise for Pioli and his work in the Lombardy capital.

‘The credit goes to Pioli. For me he was better than Sacchi, Capello, Zaccheroni, Ancelotti, Allegri. They all had great champions.

“Gullit, Van Basten, Baresi, Weah, Boban, Shevchenko, Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf, Ibrahimovic. He had a young group to work with and help. That’s why he did the greatest feat.”

The former Milan midfielder spoke about which teams will provide the biggest competition to the Rossoneri in the upcoming season.

“The usual favourites, Inter and Napoli. Let’s see how the transfer market ends, how they will line up, what problems they will have, it is not easy to put together so many champions, so many heads.

“I believe in the return of Juve, because they have talents like Chiesa. I like him a lot, maybe he is the best Italian player, when he clicks he gives you a shock.”

Finally, Savicevic expressed some doubts about some of the stars of Mourinho’s Roma squad.

“I saw him a few times on TV and in Tirana in the Conference League final. I expected him to be more … more, let’s say, a player. He and Pellegrini did not convince me.

“At the end Mourinho was cheering as if he had won the Champions League. But Mourinho, who remains a top coach, is also good. He broke through in Italy and all over Europe, he will be remembered as great.”
