La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Roma‘s top-four finish will be crucial for José Mourinho’s stay in the capital amid reports of a return to Chelsea.

The Special One’s contract expires in June 2024, but sources in England and Portugal claim Chelsea are considering bringing him back to the club in the summer.

La Gazzetta dello Sport confirms Mourinho isn’t entirely happy in the capital as he expects more investments to strengthen the team. Director Tiago Pinto has publicly said that the squad built in the summer is strong enough to earn a top-four finish, while Mourinho called a potential Champions League placement ‘a miracle’ for the Giallorossi.

Roma currently sit third in the table, two points clear of fifth-placed Atalanta and Milan, and three below second-placed Inter.

According to the pink paper, Roma’s Champions League placement will be crucial to persuade Mourinho to remain at the helm at least until the end of his contract.

Playing in Europe’s elite competition would grant more financial resources to the Giallorossi, making it easier for the Portuguese coach to turn down approaches from other clubs, especially Chelsea.

Mourinho was courted by the Portuguese federation after the World Cup and has recently confirmed that he could have left Roma in December.
