Referee designator Gianluca Rocchi defended the introduction of VAR and highlighted the need for officials to raise their level in Serie A.

The topic of poor officiating decisions has become incredibly heated this season as a number of confusing calls has left fans furious. Every fanbase can point to a frustrating moment and it’s clear that some changes are required in order to improve the overall quality of refereeing on display in Serie A.

Speaking via TuttoMercatoWeb, Rocchi first discussed the importance of VAR’s introduction.

“VAR is one of the best introductions in modern football and is bringing a lot of extra justice, although some mistakes still remain.”

He then touched on the current state of officiating in Italy.

“Concetto Lo Bello was the referee with a capital R and this is what is somewhat missing today. We all seek and would like to have referees with a capital R back, but it’s not easy. We are facing a very important generational change. VAR or no VAR, a referee must be able to make a decision.”

Juventus fans were left feeling incredibly angry at the officials following their Coppa Italia final loss to Inter yesterday, a match where the Nerazzurri scored two penalties on their way to a 4-2 victory.

It’s the latest in a long line of controversial moments, such as Francesco Acerbi’s offside winner against Spezia or the possible handball scored by Destiny Udogie against Milan.

5 thought on “Rocchi: ‘Italy needs referees with a capital R’”
  1. Rocchi perhaps is one of the officials that in the past had made so many inconsistent calls, if I was him, I will sit-down and shut up.

  2. Exactly. Rocchi is one of the main reasons refereeing is deteriorating in Italy. He had a lot of controversial performances himself. Half the time he didn’t know what he was doing.

  3. Really tired of games being decided by con artists, poor refereeing and a VAR system that seems to keep games interesting rather than honest. Be good to see more games settled by skill, effort and brilliance…
