It is reported that Napoli and Roma fans could be barred from attending away games in Italy as part of a Government clampdown after their ugly brawl on a motorway.

The clashes happened just outside a service station on the A1, which connects the south to the north of Italy.

Roma fans were on their way to a game against Milan, while Napoli supporters were heading to Genoa for the Serie A encounter with Sampdoria when they crossed paths.

According to initial reports, Napoli fans started throwing objects at the passing Roma bus, which then stopped and they all got out to brawl in the motorway, causing queues of up to 13km to build as police had to intervene.

The Lega Serie A and FIGC met with the Government representatives and police authorities today to discuss how to deal with the matter.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, they are leaning towards a blanket ban on Roma and Napoli supporters travelling to away games for the foreseeable future.

“We are all evaluating the adoption of even stricter preventative measures considering recent events,” confirmed Lega Serie A President Lorenzo Casini on Sport Mediaset.

Napoli and Roma fans are already barred from attending games away to each other because of the bitter rivalry and history of violent clashes between them, but in this case they were heading towards completely different matches.
