Nikola Kalinic has surprisingly terminated his contract with Hellas Verona by mutual consent and is expected to sign for Hajduk Split.

The striker had played this evening for a few minutes as a late substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Juventus at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin.

Only hours after that game, Verona released a statement confirming the decision had been made.

The 34-year-old terminated his contract by mutual consent after 18 months, in which he played 33 Serie A games, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

Kalinic was probably going to do this earlier, but held on because Verona had Giovanni Simeone suspended for this game, plus Gianluca Caprari and Marco Davide Faraoni injured.

According to multiple Italian sources including Sky Sport Italia, Kalinic will return to Croatia and sign for Hajduk Split.

This is a homecoming for Kalinic, who left Hajduk Split in 2009 to begin his travels around Europe for Blackburn Rovers, Dnipro, Fiorentina, Milan, Atletico Madrid, Roma and Hellas Verona.
