Davide Nicola said both Crotone and Empoli “deserve credit” for the late battle to stay in Serie A after a 2-1 win away to Sampdoria.

The Calabrians have put together a remarkable run of results, winning three of the last four along with a 1-1 draw at Torino.

However, it might all be in vain, as Empoli got back-to-back victories away to Fiorentina and Milan.

“It’s a very important victory, as it means the gap with Empoli remains the same,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Nobody expected the Tuscans to get a win like that at San Siro. They deserve credit and so do we. Now we’ll see who comes out on top at the end of the season.

“I don’t think Genoa will be sucked back into it with five rounds to go, because we still have to face sides like Milan, Lazio and Juventus.

“We had more hunger today, but also made the most of our ability to spread the play and control the tempo. We did well from the start and only went behind to a fantastic goal from an excellent player like Patrik Schick.

“We knew full well that this season would be tough, but we radically changed the squad and Coach from last season, now needing to prepare players for opponents they had only previously seen on television.”
