Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville has claimed former Juventus and Inter coach Antonio Conte ‘is not a fit’ for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future at Old Trafford is increasingly uncertain after a 5-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool on Sunday and Conte, who is without a job since leaving Inter during the summer, has been linked with a return to the Premier League.

The former Italy CT steered Inter to the Scudetto in 2020-21 before leaving the Nerazzurri on mutual consent and is now only available for work abroad.

But former England and United right-back Neville, told Sky Sports UK that he doesn’t believe the former Chelsea coach will be the correct man for the job at the Theatre of Dreams.

“They won’t bring a hitman in again. A hitman who comes in and does a job for two years,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Conte’s available but I wouldn’t bring him to Manchester United. I wouldn’t bring him here now, I wouldn’t.

“I don’t think Antonio Conte is a fit for Manchester United. I don’t think he’s a fit.

“I might be wrong, they might bring him here tomorrow and I’d get behind him. We’ve seen a coach with a specific style like Louis van Gaal didn’t work here. I’m not saying there isn’t a manager who can come to Manchester United and do well.”

Rumours have emerged that the players don’t believe Solskjaer can take them any further, but Neville thinks the board will give him the rest of the season to change their mind.

“They’re going to stick with Ole until the end of the season, Ole’s got to win a trophy this season, I think they’ll stick with him until the end of the season but this is painful.”

  1. Is this FOOTBALL ITALIA…….????!!!! IF I WANT TO READ PREMIERSHIP NEWS THEN I WILL GO TO SKY SPORTS NEWS!!!!!

FOOTBALL ITALIA SORT OUT YOUR REPORTERS/REPORTING!!!

  2. I’m not a big fan of Neville, he’s definitely tamed over the last few years, but I think his assessment on Conte is pretty accurate. Conte isn’t a good fit for Manchester United’s culture and style and I’m pretty sure Conte himself is fully aware of that as well.

  3. Ole has the most friends in media, unimaginable anyone to not be fired by now, yet he is still in charge. A shame

  4. Ok it’s EPL news but Conte is an ex Italy and Juve player and manager (and won Serie A last season with inter) so he’s big news for Italian football fans. I agree Neville talks a lot of B*****ks as Umberto and others have reminded us. Conte would do well at any club imo (for a period of time until he resigns in a maelstrom of rage!)

  5. Conte won with Chelsea but the only season he didn’t win he was sacked. I guess that was okay right ? But if he won and decided not to continue and resign he will be a bad fit for clubs who want long term right? Its okay to sack a coach if things are not working, but when a coach choose to say hay when the sun is still shinning he will be labelled a bad person. And Gary ? I don’t even wanna discuss him, he’s an English man and what they all do after stop playing is suit up and sit behind the desk talking rubbish. EPL is full of ex-players of other countries working as a coach, sport or football director, while people like Gary sit behind the screen, and they never talk about that

  6. Please make an enquiry into LORD ALLEGRI, he will teach Utd the art of bus parking and zombie ball where players only know how to back pass and sideways football. Rashford will be the first to suffer as he is too quick and likes to go forward. Matic will be richly rewarded as he has no pace and that is what Allegri loves.

  7. It’s hard to take English pundits seriously because they tend to be failed managers themselves. I’m pretty sure Conte would be a far better fit than Neville was at Valencia, where he was chewed up and spat out.

Not sure why he has to repeat himself either, it must be time-filling or something.

And Mourinho wasn’t the best manager in the world when he arrived at MU – he was already going downhill before that.

And go easy on the epl stories, Football Italia – you’re getting like the rest of the world.

  8. Why is he repeating every other sentence twice?

I was reading this article in Dustin Hoffman’s voice.

Or that guy from Goofellas: “Gotta get the papers, get the papers”

    Gary two-times over here

  9. What did Gary Neville win as Valencia manager? What did Antonio Conte win at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter? I think Conte would do fine at Man United. He knows how to get the best, even from average players.
