Diego Milito believes Inter striker Mauro Icardi is “worth Gonzalo Higuain” and has become “a team player”.

The former striker was in the stands on Sunday to see his Argentine compatriot score one and set up one against Juventus in a 2-1 win, with Nerazzurri fans now viewing him as a lucky charm.

“Will I come to the other big games this season?” Milito considered in an interview with Gazette dello Sport.

“If I did that my wife would kill me! This win is just down to a great Inter.

“Icardi? What an extraordinary game! We all knew he was a killer in front of goal, but against Juve he was a real team player.

“He took fouls to help the team, not to mention the lucidity of the moment he came up with that cross to [Ivan] Perisic with the outside of his foot. He’s only 23-years-old!

“If you want to open a cycle, you don’t sell such a talented young player.

“Argentina? His real problem is the competition, I know that well since I had to jostle with [Lionel] Messi, [Carlos] Tevez, [Sergio] Aguero, [Hernan] Crespo, [Javier] Saviola… but right now Mauro deserves to be called-up.

“Ahead of Higuain? He’s very strong, [Juventus Coach Max] Allegri will have his reasons, but I was surprised when I saw Pipita on the bench.

“Icardi is worth him, even though Gonzalo has more experience, having played at a certain level with Real [Madrid]. I see a battle between them for capocannoniere.”

Milito was then asked what the Beneamata’s aims for the coming season should be.

“Inter have the obligation to always aim for the maximum. Beating the champions shows what this squad can do, I already liked it in Pescara where they showed great character.

“With Juve they added good play. They have to return to the Champions League, they’ll be fighting with Juve, Napoli and Roma who are ahead. I see the others as being behind.

“Frank de Boer? Excellent, he always wants to impose his game and aim for the goal. A Coaching change in August was a dangerous choice, but from outside I can’t tell you the reasons for it.

“I understand the scepticism on the part of a country tied to very tactical football, but De Boer just needs time.”

The former forward was top-scorer as Inter won the treble in 2010, and he discussed his best memories.

“Do you know what the best goal of that treble was?” Milito asked.

“The one against Roma. Winning the Coppa Italia in their stadium gave us the strength to make history.

“We won the Scudetto at Siena and we suffered a lot. They were relegated, but I only scored at the end. Then we went to Madrid [for the Champions League final] too fired-up to lose.”
