Mauro Icardi admits there was “contact” with Napoli but “I always said I wanted to stay at Inter”.

The Nerazzurri captain is set for a lucrative new contract at San Siro, having scored one and set up one against Juventus on Sunday to continue his fine start to the season.

This summer it appeared he’d be leaving the Beneamata with Napoli and Arsenal interested, but the striker says he always wanted to stay.

“I always said I didn’t want to leave Inter,” Icardi told Tiki Taka.

This summer it appeared he’d be leaving the Beneamata with Napoli and Arsenal interested, but the striker says he always wanted to stay.

“I always said I didn’t want to leave Inter,” Icardi told Tiki Taka.

“I’m happy in Milan, I want to win something in this shirt, and with this great squad we now have an opportunity to do so.

“Was I close to Napoli? I wasn’t close, but there was contact. Not just from Napoli, but with my wife who is also my agent. But I hinted to her and to everyone that I wanted to stay in Milan.”

Some have compared Icardi to Filippo Inzaghi, and the forward is an admirer of Super Pippo.

“He was a great striker, he always played on the line of offside. Every player is different, but I’ve seen a lot of his goals and I like his style of play, always right on the limit of offside.”
