Milan have received a terrible blow with news that Andrea Pirlo is out for six weeks due to strained knee ligaments.

The midfielder has been sidelined since suffering a thigh strain against Roma on December 18 and was all set for his comeback from the start with Parma this evening.

However, during the last training session on Friday he sprained his knee and tests showed there has also been ligament damage.

“The chief medic of AC Milan, Doctor Gianluca Melegati, confirms the tests on Andrea Pirlo showed a second degree strain of the collateral medial ligament in the right knee.

“The recovery process is expected to last around six weeks.”

Not only does this rule Pirlo out of both Champions League legs against Tottenham, it also means he'll miss Serie A clashes with Napoli, Juventus, Palermo and possibly the derby against Inter on April 3.

It is also a heavy blow considering fellow midfielder Massimo Ambrosini is out of action for a similar period of time.

Milan squad: Abbiati, Amelia; Antonini, Didac Vilà, Jankulovski, Legrottaglie, Nesta, Oddo, Papastathopoulos, Thiago Silva, Yepes; Emanuelson, Flamini, Gattuso, Merkel, Seedorf, Van Bommel; Cassano, Ibrahimovic, Pato, Robinho
