New Bari Coach Bortolo Mutti insists “we're not stupid, but I do not feel like a caretaker manager” in a doomed campaign.

The new tactician was drafted in on Thursday evening when Giampiero Ventura resigned in the wake of fan protests.

“It is in my nature to go for extremes,” said Mutti ahead of Sunday's debut against Genoa.

“It happened to me at Messina and Atalanta, too. We are not stupid, we realise the situation is very difficult, but as with everything else we must face it with the right attitude and enthusiasm.

“I am here to create the foundations for a climb back up the table. We need help from the fans, the strength of character from these players and a pinch of luck.

“I do not feel like a caretaker manager.”

President Vincenzo Matarrese also commented on Ventura's decision to step aside and terminate the contract by mutual consent.

“Up until three weeks ago I was utterly convinced that once the injured players recovered and the January signings settled, we would get back on track. Instead, things precipitated.

“I am disappointed and sad about the separation from Ventura. I've never fired anyone, but he was tired and if he had said he was willing to continue, then he would've done.

“As for myself, I don't know if I'll remain in charge of Bari if we don't stay in Serie A.”
