Paolo Maldini reveals Luciano Spalletti asked him to be on his staff at Zenit St Petersburg.

The current Roma Coach was in charge of the Russian side from December 2009 until March 2014, winning the Russian Premier League twice, and it has now emerged he could have been working with a Milan legend.

“I could have gone to Zenit,” Maldini told Championat.

“Spalletti, the former Coach, called me and asked me to work with him as part of his technical staff. I didn’t want to fill that role so I said no.

“I didn’t want to work in that club because, beyond geography, Russia is not close to Italy.”

So Spartak Moscow Coach Massimo Carrera hasn’t called him?

“He doesn’t need me! He’s doing really well, and I’m not surprised because he also learned so much with Antonio Conte.

“Anyone who works with the former Juventus Coach can do well.”
