Seydou Keita reveals he turned down ‘very lucrative offers’ to stay at Roma, because of the ‘respect and affection’ for him.

It was announced this morning that the Malian international had signed a new deal with the Giallorossi, and the former Barcelona man revealed his motivations in an interview with the club’s official website.

“I turned down very lucrative offers to stay here, because the club and the fans have always shown me great respect and affection.

“I’m at a very important stage of my career, and I’m happy to renew with the team. It’s true that money is important, but at my age [35] respect and affection are also important.

“We’re starting a new season, and I hope that for myself and the team it’s better than last season.”

Keita then went on to discuss the aims for this season, and admits the resurgence of the Milan clubs could be a threat.

“It’s important that we prepare well, because it will be a very long season. We’re feeling very good, like last year.

“We finished second, and as always the club and the players want to win, and we have to do better than last year to reach the levels of Juventus, as well as competing with the other clubs like Milan, Inter and Napoli.

“This Roma wants to fight to win, it won’t be easy, but we want to do better than last season.”
