Roma have doubts about Nicolo Zaniolo ahead of the summer, unsure whether to cash in on him or tie him down to a new deal.

The 22-year-old Italian forward has not had an easy season in the Italian capital under Jose Mourinho as inconsistency has plagued his campaign, with great performances undermined by invisible games. A hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Bodo/Glimt on Thursday reminded both the fans and the club of his qualities, leading the Giallorossi to reflect.

As detailed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma now need to decide whether they want to sell Zaniolo in the summer to make significant capital gains, or if they want to keep a hold of the Italian and make him a talismanic figure in the squad.

Roma paid Inter around €4.5m plus a 15% resale for Zaniolo back in 2018 and he could be sold in the summer for around €40m, with Juventus and Milan both interested in picking him up.

Renewing the 22-year-old’s contract would be needed if they decided to keep him as he only earns around €2.2m net per season in Rome, less than a significant number of his teammates. Zaniolo would want to earn the same as Lorenzo Pellegrini, who currently receives around €6m including add-ons per season.
