Although Juventus executives won’t admit it publicly, Tuttosport claims that the club is upset about some ‘incoherent’ decisions from referees and VAR in the last two games.

Adrien Rabiot saw a goal disallowed for handball in Juventus’ 2-1 win over Cagliari on Saturday night. The France international deflected a shot from Luca Pellegrini, but the potential equaliser was disallowed for a handball spotted after a VAR check.

The new handball rule approved for 2021-22 specifies that ‘If an attacking player’s accidental handball immediately precedes another player scoring, the goal will now be awarded.’ On paper, the referee’s decision was correct, although, watching the replay, it remains unclear whether Rabiot touched the ball with his arm, his shoulder or with another part of his body.

Watch: Juventus fans’ rage over penalty kick denied against Inter

The videos didn’t prove precisely that there had been a clear and obvious mistake from the referee, which is the same reason why the Bianconeri were not awarded a penalty kick against Inter last week for a foul of Alessandro Bastoni on Denis Zakaria.

Rabiot took to social media to complain after the match against Inter and following Juventus’ win over Cagliari on Saturday. “I am still trying to understand…” the France midfielder wrote, posting a screenshot of his supposed handball in Sardinia.

Juventus haven’t complained publicly, and according to Tuttosport newspaper, they want ‘no excuses’ for players. However, there is a feeling that the last two VAR checks led to very different conclusions, both harmful for the Old Lady. A VAR check has taken place eight times during Juventus games this season. No other Serie A club has more this term.

  1. Imagine that? 8 times in 32 games….2880 minutes of football.

With technology at hand it should be much more, for all the teams! Should be an aid for the refs but sadly it is not being used properly or effectively. Did nothing for transparency of the league.

Shame. wasted opportunity…but perhaps the powers that be like it like this.

  2. Regardless of the number or what decisions have been made, VAR is ruining our once simple fluid and beautiful game. Although sadly I know it will never happen, VAR should be abandoned and the game returned to the fans.

  3. Italians always make things harder than they need to be its Italian VAR bureaucracy at its best . Remember old bug eyes Collina what a drama queen he was . The Ref should be like a ghost in the game not the star . Exactly what they’ve done with VAR. They should limits its use to once or twice a game per team a”captains challenge “. Like in Tennis when they 2 challenge calls per set

  4. @Rob When was football in the hands of fans? Fifa is as corrupt as ever and UEFA follow suit. Maybe, just maybe, pre-Bosman days when the agents and the Sky TV money didn’t turn it into circus. Those were times when players were loyal to clubs and in Italy, the ‘bandierine’ would really represent their clubs for 15-20 years. Unthinkable with the likes of Raiola and Co around now, plus crazy sponsorship deals and Russia/Arab money.

  5. If Juve are upset then Milan should be furious. Fact is Inter are the only top team to receive favorable calls this season. All the other big names have been wronged on different occasions to different degrees.

  6. Crawf100

No need to go back to 1940s no. Just earlier this season. Fiorentina denied a penalty against juve after Danilo handball. Udinese denied penalty against juve after Bernardeschi foul. Empoli denied a penalty against juve after De Ligt foul. But who cares right?

  7. @milan can – you literally only beat us due to a bad ref decision when Sanchez was rammed off the ball by giroud. Let’s not talk about favourable decisions had we got that one the title race would already be over

  8. @Ahmed Hossam Coming from an impartial/neutral Spezia fan, your examples are terrible, really terrible. The ball grazed the top of Danilo’s shoulder against Fiorentina, but I guess you want the handball rules to change. De Ligt did a clean shoulder to shoulder against Bajrami and nobody even appealed from Empoli. Your worst example, the Bernardeschi one, is so bad, because it was a foul on Bernardeschi by Molina. Molina even got a yellow card and apologised.

I’m guessing you’re an Inter fan, but hating Juventus doesn’t mean their games shouldn’t be officiated fairly. Moggi is gone, Juventus served their punishment in Serie B and your club is Serie A champion and about to be champion again. My club is 15th, so things could be worse. Juve don’t “own the refs” anymore, get over it.

  9. and norata

How many of those 9 titles are helped by ref? And how many of them would have been taken back had VAR been introduced sooner?

Talk to me when you actually win an European title in recent memory

  10. @Parraratiticicici We didn’t say anything when Cuadrado dived because he didn’t get a penalty. What are you talking about mate?

  11. Ahmed
    Let it go mate
Holding on to these things will not do your health any good
You quote 3 thing in the season
Inter had 3 in the single game
Martinez second yellow, the soft pen for, the soft pen not given
But it all evens out in the end

Juve should have capitalised when on top

  12. So Jubentus are hurt by 2 incidents in the last what, 20 years of Serie A? LOL

  13. If this is the future of football, do away with on field officials. It is confusing when they do or do not use the technology. It has not made anything better. Slows down the game. And allowed an excuse for officials to make or not make a call.

  14. First of all, if you actually listened to Allegri after the games, he didn’t complain AT ALL about the decisions. He just said sometimes they go your way and other times they don’t…something that other managers NEVER do. And @Moreata, VAR was introduced in 2017 in Serie A, so with VAR, Juve won 3 leagues titles, 2 Coppe Italia, and 2 Supercups.
Now, in that time, in Europe, go ask Manchester City how many titles they won? As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, not winning a cup is based on incidents and the best team doesn’t always win. In recent years, Juve haven’t had the team to challenge for the CL…certainly not to the level of Real and Bayern, for example. But in Italy, they’ve been undoubtedly the better team. Other than Inter fans, everyone agrees which is why the managers and players have won awards in that time. And actually, Juve core players were the stars in Italy’s Euro win…likewise when Italy won the World Cup.

  15. Ah, Clown face has appeared! I was wondering when that part-time Inter supporter would show his face. Think back to your treble win where the linesmen helped Inter several times against Barca in the semis. Genius Mourinho’s tactic of letting Barca hit the post and bar 3 times and then score on the counter! Or playing total catenaccio and being hammered in the final but just about scraping a win against Bayern (Those are the kind of incidents I’m talking about).

  16. @luca Romano

Empoli president complained after the juve game about 2 penalties not just 1 by the way. The De Ligt foul was with his foot not shoulder. Udinese complained after the juve game. Fiorentina did too. So I am hardly making things up. That Danilo handball, not shoulder, was evident. Just saying juve had calls for them too, they have no right to complain. That’s my point. Not crying conspiracy or saying Moggi is back…

  17. @NOrata

The linesman who allowed Pique’s offside goal at Nou Camp to stand, you mean? Or the linesman at San Siro who denied Milito a one on one with Valdes when Milito was actually onside? But who cares about such facts that don’t suit your ignorant agenda… I guess the ref also helped Inter by sending off Thiago Motta in Nou Camp in the first half. As for scrapping a 2-0 win against Bayern…guess which Italian club was destroyed 1-4 at home by that Bayern team in the groupstage in the same season? 😉 they start with the letter j…
