Italy are discussing which city to use as a venue for their EURO 2024 qualifier against England on March 23 and seem to be leaning towards Bari or Palermo.

Unlike England with Wembley Stadium, the Azzurri are itinerant, so every game is played in a different arena depending on the circumstances.

The Stadio Olimpico in Rome is a regular choice for big matches, but the Corriere dello Sport warns that is unlikely this time because it would be just four days before the big Serie A clash between local rivals Roma and Lazio.

Coach Roberto Mancini is also trying to steer the FIGC away from choosing a city in the north of Italy, as it will be rather cold in March.

Bologna, Reggio-Emilia, Parma and Milan are options, but a more likely contender is Bari or Palermo.

Both clubs from these big southern cities have struggled with bankruptcy in recent years and are fighting their way back to the top flight, currently challenging for promotion in Serie B.

Bari’s Stadio San Nicola would be an intriguing pick, because Italy beat England here in the third place final for the 1990 World Cup.

  1. North or south it doesn’t matter. As long as people come to fill up the stadium and cheer on the Azzurri
