Milan Skriniar says Inter can only aim for first place but admits his side must improve their consistency.

The Nerazzurri secured a return to the Champions League on the final day of last season but still finished 23 points behind Scudetto winners Juventus.

Despite the progress made in their first campaign under Luciano Spalletti, the 23-year-old defender believes the San Siro club’s next focus must be on closing the gap to the teams who finished above them.

“We need to work hard to reduce the gap to Juventus, Napoli and Roma,” Skriniar told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Last season they were more consistent and that was one of our real faults.

“A club like ours can only aim for the maximum objective.

“We want to be right up there and be fighting until the end, then we will see what happens.”

One of the players expected to help Inter bridge the gap to the top is Stefan de Vrij, who will join from Lazio on a free transfer in time for pre-season.

“He is a very strong player who had a great season with Lazio,” Skriniar commented.

“His performances have caught the eyes of everyone.

“He is an important signing for us and we can only be happy about it. There’s no doubt he will give a good contribution in raising the level of the squad.”
