Serie A clubs spent €174m on agents’ fees in 2021, 26% more than in 2020, with Juventus, Inter and Roma the top three spenders last year.

Despite the financial crisis hitting Italian football, Serie A clubs spent more money on agent fees in 2021 than in the previous year.

As Calcio&Finanza highlights, the average spending of Serie A clubs on agent fees in 2021 is €8.7m. The tally includes negotiations for new signings, sales or contract extensions. Last year, Juventus paid almost €30m to agents, followed by Inter and Roma. There is a huge gap between the top three spenders and the other clubs. Milan are fourth with slightly more than €12m.

The Rossoneri saw Gigio Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu leave at the end of their contracts in the summer and agents’ fees are believed to be one of the reasons why the Rossoneri failed to extend with their former stars.

Napoli, who currently sit second in the Serie A table, are behind Atalanta, Fiorentina and Sampdoria have paid less than €7m to players’ representatives in 2021.

  1. Milan would have been top of the list if Dollarumma extended his contract. An easy 15-20m commission to Mino.

And another 10m to Kessie’s agent for next financial year if Kessie extended. That would have been almost 85% of 2021’s total.

Agents have to make their money too but should not be exorbitant fees.

  2. In some cases I’m not entirely sure why agents are necessary other than to extort clubs out of more money that doesn’t go into the player’s pocket.

  3. Agent fees should come out their clients income. Not the clubs clubs. Players would be more selective in agents. And be signed by clubs that really want them.

  4. Agreed guys, 100%.

I could have easily replaced “exorbitant” with “extortionate” @Chris2. Bang on.

  5. The drop between Roma and Milan is unbelievable, its half the cost. Yet, top of the table. Just goes to show agents are ripping clubs off, as if we didn’t know that already.

  6. Agents know how to exploit poorly managed football clubs.

That’s really all there is to it.
Get these parasites out of the game, or put a limiter on them instead of on the players.
