The former Empoli and Sampdoria Coach had the first interview with Milan TV since his appointment.

“I worked really hard to get this chance. Milan are the most successful and one of the most important clubs in Europe. This is a great opportunity for me, I am happy and motivated.

“It’s been a long journey, and it will continue to be, because it never ends, you never stop building ideas and projects. At this moment, I am very happy to start at this big club and I am very motivated. I have to say that I’ve already had plenty of rest and now can’t wait to get started!”

Giampaolo terminated his contract with Sampdoria after three years at Marassi to take the Rossoneri job, where he met with directors Paolo Maldini and Zvonimir Boban.

“I was struck by their seriousness, competence and passion. Maldini and Boban really transmit what it means to be at Milan as a Coach or a player. They are top level figures and their passion is contagious.

“At the start of my career, I’d lose to Milan often, but more recently achieved a few victories, probably because I was in charge of more competitive teams.

“Playing at San Siro is always an exciting moment, as there’s no coincidence it’s called La Scala del Calcio. I consider it the most fascinating stadium in Italy.”

Milan are rebuilding, but so are Juventus, Inter and Roma under new Coaches, while Napoli continue the Carlo Ancelotti era.

“I think with the return of Maurizio Sarri and Antonio Conte along with the many talented Coaches in Serie A, it’ll be even more competitive than last season.

“There has been a change of mentality in many sides, including the smaller clubs who are now ambitious enough to go to San Siro and attack, so the differences can be marginal at times. I consider it a very difficult league.”

Giampaolo was hired because of his possession-based and attack-minded style of football, which has been compared to Sarri and Pep Guardiola.

“Milan’s history speaks of a club that always sought the beauty in football and the aesthetics along with the result. An even better explanation is that Milan have the culture of good football, so believe they can achieve results through entertaining performances.

“Now I am not presumptuous enough to compare myself to the Milan of the past, but that ought to be our mission, to play enticing and fascinating football, winning the games thanks to that approach.

“I am anxious to step into the Milanello training ground, as I always heard such good things about the infrastructure, organisation and possibility of working well, so I’ll probably bring the date of pre-season training forward so I can get to know the Rossoneri atmosphere as soon as possible.”
