La Lupa started 2021 with a 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Sunday and have won four of their last five games, to help them sit third in Serie A after 15 games.

With a seven-point gap up to League leaders Milan, Fonseca believes Roma are among the teams who can fight for the prize this term.

“The teams that have invested the most are Juventus and Inter, then there are five or six other strong teams that can fight for the title, including us,” he said at a press conference.

“Look at what Milan are doing, it’s fantastic. Then there are also Napoli and Atalanta, even if Juve and Inter are the favourites.”

The Giallorossi continue with a trip to Crotone, who lost 6-2 to Inter on Sunday, but the Portuguese coach has noticed the ‘quality and courage’ shown by the newly promoted side.

“I spoke to the players about this. Crotone are a great team, we don’t have to look at the position, but at what they have done,” he said.

“I watched the match against Inter, they have quality and courage. And looked mainly at the first half they played there.

“Tomorrow will be a difficult match, but we have to play with a lot of ambition and attention against a quality opponent, they always want the ball.”

The match against Crotone kicks off at 14.00 UK time tomorrow and the coach confirmed Antonio Mirante and Davide Santon are not ready for the match.

“They are recovering but they will not be available tomorrow,” he said and added that Leonardo Spinazzola is doing better: “He’s doing well, I’m confident for his recovery.”
