Most Milan fans are angry at Maurizio Mariani’s decision to disallow Ismael Bennacer’s goal against Inter, but also highlight that the Rossoneri need at least one new striker next season.

Stefano Pioli’s boys have been eliminated from the Coppa Italia semis after a 3-0 loss against Inter yesterday. They have one last chance to win a trophy this season as they remain the table leaders in Serie A with a two-point lead on their city rivals who, however, still have a game in hand.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reports, most Milan fans regret Mariani’s decision to disallow Bennacer’s goal in the second half for an offside of Pierre Kalulu. The Milan defender was beyond every Inter player, but it’s unclear whether or not he penalised Samir Handanovic preventing him from saving Bennacer’s shot.

Pioli was furious after the final whistle and so were Milan fans who said referees’ mistakes against their team this season remind them of Calciopoli, the scandal of Italian football that saw Juventus relegated to Serie B in 2006.

Nkunku, Haller and Zaniolo: Milan’s new transfer targets under Investcorp

However, Milan were still 2-0 down when Bennacer scored, so they’d need one more goal to qualify for the final. Milan’s struggles in front of goal have been a matter of concern over the last few weeks. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s physical issues haven’t been helpful and Olivier Giroud scored his last goal more than a month ago against Napoli.

Milan fans have criticised many players, such as Alexis Saelemaekers of Junior Messias and hope the Rossoneri will buy more attacking players in the summer. Divock Origi is close to reaching an agreement with Milan, but the Serie A giants could have a €300m transfer budget if Bahrain-based fund Investcorp completes the club’s takeover from Elliott for €1.1m billion.

  1. Calciopoli 2? Milan need to get over themselves here. Kalulu was in an offside position and you can argue it every other way but being so close to the goalkeeper and so far from the Inter defenders in front it’s clear cut offside. It’s the rules of the game.

If that’s onside then the foul on Darmian was a penalty.

I really wish they goal had counted though as they would have still lost as they are all in all a poor side that have punched well above their weight all season. As much of his nonsense talk everyone has had to suffer this season, Pioli has done a great job to get a pretty mediocre squad to get Milan where they are.

But with the fixture list in front of them I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say they’ll likely finish 4th come the end of the season.

  2. Have AC Milan made an official statement stating that their position is that this is calciopoli 2?

    No.

    Who IS saying this though?

    ….

  3. He he he…come on, Milan‘s coach, players, administration and fans need to remove their biased spectacles and look at the game and all events with reality: 1) Milan were outplayed and beaten. 2) Theo’s 1st half fault could have been a red but ref but was only given yellow. Even then, half the milan bench was ready to storm the field even though it was a clear foul. 2) There was a clear foul on Darmian by Theo which would have been a penalty and 2nd yellow. Again, ref and VAR let it go. 3) There was a clear foul on Lautaro right before the disallowed goal where Kalulu stepped on his foot from behind and took his boot off. Again, ref and VAR let it slip…

  4. Milan wants to complain? Take a look at the two games against Roma this season and ask themselves if they still believe they are totally clean? Because if they do, they would have lost all their credibility.

  5. Milan must play in a nother formation, they must stop with 4-2-3-1. stop playing with 1 striker, stop playing with 2 difensive central midfielders, stop playing with a defensive central midfielder as a trequarista. PIOLI is not the wright coach voor AC Milan. we need a coach who wants to play attacking football.

  6. There are statements from other referees and former referees that the decision to rule out the goal was correct.
