Both Milan clubs will miss out on the Champions League once again this season, as Juventus, Napoli and Roma will be the top-three.

Serie A’s coefficient took a hit in the latter stages of the Champions League and Europa League this season, and the former Rossoneri midfielder believes calcio needs two of its biggest clubs.

“It’s my belief that to come back stronger in Europe and reap the benefits of Europe, Italian football needs Milan and Inter to be competitive again,” Gattuso explained outside the Lega Serie A, before defending calcio.

“Over the years we’ve done down Italian football and I think that’s a mistake. We put aside our goalkeeping school, our man marking technique.

“I think that’s a mistake, Italian football isn’t all rubbish, as we’ve won four World Cups. Something of our football tradition must be recovered, also by the Coaches who come out of Coverciano.”
