Monza president Silvio Berlusconi underlined the club’s lofty ambitions after their impressive 2-0 win over Juventus.

The former Prime Minister of Italy and Milan owner took over at Monza in September 2018, acquiring the club whilst they were in the Serie C. After laying the foundations, Berlusconi’s backing allowed the club to rise to Serie A for the first time in their 110 year history, putting local supporters in dreamland.

Monza have done well in their debut Serie A season and currently sit 11th in the table after 20 games, sitting 12 points clear of relegation candidates Hellas Verona. Raffaele Palladino’s side picked up a historic 2-0 win away to Juventus last week, making their first year in the topflight a memorable one.

Speaking to his players at Villa Gernetto, Berlusconi first discussed his and Monza’s lofty ambitions for the coming years.

“Since Palladino’s arrival, we’ve been in fifth place, together with Milan. In Monza we really believe, we want to make it become even more important, and we can say it Adriano (Galliani): we want to win the Scudetto, next year or the year after.”

The Monza president then discussed the club’s growth in recent years and the foundations laid for the future.

“With Monza we bought new players, we doubled our training ground, Monzello, which is now the biggest and most beautiful in Italy. Now we have also put in place the stadium with a small expenditure of €25m.

“But things have changed: when we arrived, there were 300 people watching Monza, now 10,000. We have to be united and what we have written in the locker room applies especially now, those who believe in it fight all obstacles and those who believe in it win. We must make Monza great.”
