Milan’s equaliser in the final minute against Napoli was disallowed when Olivier Giroud was considered to be in an active offside position, reviving the debate started by Atalanta against Roma yesterday.

This proved a decisive incident, as Franck Kessie had equalised in stoppages at San Siro, but Giroud was judged to be in an active offside position despite lying on the ground underneath a Napoli defender.

However, Giroud did prevent Juan Jesus from clearing the ball effectively with his presence in an offside position, which is why it was considered active.

VAR did stick to the protocol this time – telling the referee to check the monitor and judge for himself – whereas the issue in Atalanta-Roma was that the VAR made the decision on whether Jose Luis Palomino’s offside was active or passive.

Analysis: Should Atalanta equaliser have been disallowed?

The offside rules state that:

“A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:

  • interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
  • interfering with an opponent by:
  • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
  • challenging an opponent for the ball or
  • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”

  1. No it was the correct decision. Giroud was offside and Kalulu handled the ball. Milan had ample time to find the goal but did nothing meaningful even after going behind early. If you have Juan Jesus in the backline you have to put him under pressure. Ospina was comfortable all night long and all I saw was Milan just crossing the ball into the box hoping for something. They should have easily been able to get at least the draw at home despite not having certain players. Napoli were in the same position.

  2. Pioli should lose everygame where his beloved Zinadine Krunic starts the match, crying about the ref after you chose to field an anti football line up is useless, i’m just wondering how many games does Steve Jobes wannabe has to ruin for us until he realises that the heir of Maradona from Bosnia isnt who he thinks he is.

  3. Milan played terrible (Napoli wasn’t better though), but that’s another matter. The goal imo should’ve stood. That’s just a ridiculous interpretation of the situation. Any team in the world would be angry if they were robbed of that goal (Napoli included) and no team will ever protest if such a goal were given against them, same as Napoli and Jesus didn’t even protest, because it was a valid goal.

Short of using magic to make himself disappear, Giroud could do nothing about his situation, and Jesus was not effected anyway.

  4. Was this a clear and obvious error? The Atlanta goal is different and I’m not sure why this has been placed in the same content. There was at least another phase of play after Giroud “interfered” with the defender in the ground. Why can football not follow cricket per say and teams have limited challenges and they have to be very specific in what they are challenging? I’m afraid the true answer to that question is that I suspect it removes control from the referees. They are quite happy picking and choosing when they apply the ambiguous rules.

  5. Very straightforward call from the ref. Giroud is CLEARLY offside and is CLEARLY interfering with play.
People saying opposite know nothing about football.

  6. Outlandish decision. And I don’t support Milan by any means. Incredibly harsh way to conclude a game devoid of quality, but with plenty of scrapping and desire.

  7. @Krunic the Beast. Who would you play at LW then? Maldini? Unknown youth player X? Our flanks are decimated. No Rebic, Leao, Theo, Calabria, we sill have no real RW (sorry the Messias story is cute, but he’s not the answer), and Brahim has disappeared (also another position Krunic would play, so who instead of Diaz? Maldini? Unknown youth player X?). Take Salah, Mane, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold out of Liverpool’s lineup and see what happens. We are getting crushed by injuries and lack of depth. At this point fans need to adjust expectations. Top 4 is the true objective. With consistent CL participation we can begin to address the holes in the squad.

  8. @Vero Rossonero. I would either change the formation into a 442 with Alexis&Messi/Castillejo on the flanks, or play with a 4312 system with Bennaser, Tonali and Kessie in the midfield, or you can play 433 with Messi and Alexis on the flanks, or even if you wanna keep the same formation, just put Alexis on the left, exactly like how he came of the bench and played there for the last 2 games, and he played well, reviving the left flank.

Krunic is horrible and he is not a football player, at the very best he can be an axe in the midfield nothing more.

  9. @Krunic. OK, you’re just moving some of the players we have around. How does this solve the problem of missing 4 important players and having 1 essentially go missing while on the pitch? 4-3-1-2? 2003 is calling, it wants its formation back. How are we going to feed the two static towers is we have no wide players? Ballo-Toure and Florenzi making “devastating” runs from deep? The only clubs playing 4-3-1-2 are near the bottom of the table. 4-3-3? Same problem as 4-2-3-1. NO WINGERS. Krunic is just your whipping boy (and a lot of other people’s).

  10. @Krunic, and I would hardly say that Alexis has “revived” the flank when he comes on. Yes, he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. And that’s great. It serves a purpose, but he’s not the answer. Tomorrow he will start and all the Alexis haters will appear saying how HE is trash. Because for every Krunic hater there are two Alexis haters.

  11. @Vero Rossonero. So you actually prefer that wood chopper over Alexis? Tell me, if he is a headless chicken, what does it make Krunic? i would rather have a player who can handle the ball and can push forward instead of that back passing grunt.

And 4312, 433, 4231 it doesnt matter to me as long we use the best players available and not some lame ducks in unfamiliar positions, i know the injuries are a devastating problem, that is shampoo boy Maldini’s fault, but still we gotta make the best of the situation, Krunic has proven to be totally sh&t a few games in a row, enough with him, enough with Florenzi, and enough with Bakayoko.

  12. Krunic can do a decent job as a central midfielder paired with a defensive one, with permission to roam forward a little, like he did at the beginning of the season. He played really good there, because that’s his position.

He should not play in a more attacking position though, like any of the three positions behind the striker, but we do have many injuries and are short of players.
