The former Nerazzurri goalkeeper revealed recently that he had been in contention to replace Walter Mazzarri, but the job eventually went to Roberto Mancini.

Zenga spent 12 years at San Siro, and moved into coaching at the end of his career, but admits now that he’ll probably never be the Beneamata Coach.

“It’s all over, I no longer dream of returning as Coach,” Zenga insisted in an interview with Tiki Taka.

“I was in the running after Mazzarri’s sacking.

“Unlike journalists, fans and pundits I could never speak ill of Mazzarri. I wouldn’t dare do that, I have to analyse things as a Coach.

“Who wanted me and who didn’t? I don’t know.

“It’s like if you go to a job interview, you are told that you’ve either got the job or you haven’t. It was the same in my situation.

“As for Mancini, I know him well, we played together many times.”

Mancini’s first game in his second spell on the Inter bench was Sunday’s Milan derby, and Zenga believes that the fixture is in a state of decline.

“I saw the game on Sunday evening.

“I thought both teams were very timid, Inter had just changed Coach while Milan were coming off five or six games which weren’t brilliant.

“I’d have been surprised to see a spectacular and beautiful game.

“I don’t think it’s fair to compare the derby these days with how it was in my time, thinking it would match up to the derbies of a few years ago where it was the absolute benchmark and was an inspiration for all of football.

“That’s not something that affects just Inter and Milan, but the whole of Italian football.

“We’re in a period of decline at the moment.”
