This morning’s Corriere dello Sport reports that Zabaleta has agreed a €2.5m, three-year deal and will hold a meeting with City either today or tomorrow to try and engineer an exit.

It’s thought to be unlikely that the English side would demand a big fee from Roma, and it’s thought the transfer will cost around €3m, plus agent fees.

The Lupi are pursuing a number of options on the transfer market, but are restricted at the moment by the non-departures of Adem Ljajic and Iago Falque.

Former Juventus defender Martin Caceres is expected to sign a two-year contract, but the deal has not yet been closed.

By contrast, Empoli’s Mario Rui is expected to officially join before Saturday, when pre-season training gets underway at Pinzolo.

Wojciech Szczęsny is thought to be close to returning on loan from Arsenal, so Gerson could be loaned-out, with Morgan De Sanctis given a one-year contract extension.

The final area to be addressed is the centre of defence, with Coach Luciano Spalletti specifically asking for Mehdi Benatia of Bayern Munich.

However, that option appears to be closed, as Juventus are on the verge of signing the former Giallorossi man, so Inter’s Juan Jesus could be top target.
