German referee Daniel Siebert was jeered off the pitch at half-time at San Siro, and not just because of the red card and penalty, as his general approach to Milan vs. Chelsea angered everyone.

The Champions League showdown was ruined after 18 minutes when Fikayo Tomori had a hand on Mason Mount’s shoulder twice, considered both a penalty and crucially also a straight red card for denying a clear scoring opportunity.

Siebert generally seemed to lose control of what was by no means a violent match.

Official UEFA statistics show that in the first half there was a grand total of 17 fouls committed by the teams, seven by Milan and 10 by Chelsea.

Yet he still dished out one red card and five yellow – three for Milan, two for Chelsea.

With six cards, it was more that had been dished out in the first half of any Champions League match this season in its opening 45 minutes.

While by the absolute letter of the law, the red card is a consequence of the penalty being on a ‘clear scoring opportunity,’ the referee could just as easily have used common sense in only giving a yellow card, as the challenge itself was so timid.

  1. The only person who fails to use his experience is tomori,he complicated things for team mates and at fault for this loss.he could have made things less complicated by allowing mount to freely have the scoring opportunity since he already step above him, with that he could have not ruined Milan chances of getting back in the game, the earlier match between Manchester city and Copenhagen has vindicated the referee and the rules are clear.
Last season kessie makes similar mistakes and ruined Milan vs athletico Madrid after leading 1-0 we end up loosing that game that eventually decide our progression to next stage of the competition,Mr pioli need to consider and install decipline in the lads game.

Last season was ruined by the ref as well. Kessie played bad, but the first one was nowhere near yellow, so there should have been no red.
This case, ever after the final of Barca vs Arsenal when Lehmann was sent off, the recommendation has been given that there should be no double punishment. There were no grounds for the red card at all. Tomori is ar fault, but pen was more than sufficient. I feel two years in a row Milan are robbed off qualification chances.

  3. Quick draw cowboy refs shouldnt ever be allowed to ref again, disgrace, i’m tired of refs deciding games, especially so early in game, didnt even bother to go to VAR.

  4. The ref doesn’t have common sense because he follows the rule of the game, what a logic, 😂.

Tomori made silly mistake in the box. Mediocre team with a mediocre manager.

  5. Completely ruined the game, light penalty, the shot had been saved already, and even harsher red card. The ref was extreme and on a power trip all first half especially. He even carded mason who was allegedly fouled lol
