Italian refereeing pundit Luca Marelli maintains there were two huge mistakes in the Champions League against Juventus and Milan this evening.

The Bianconeri were beaten 2-0 in Israel by Maccabi Haifa, while the Rossoneri saw their match with Chelsea ruined by an early Fikayo Tomori red card.

Commenting on his Twitter account, DAZN pundit and former referee Marelli gave his views on the situation.

“Let’s just say the Italians were unlucky this evening: In Maccabi-Juventus there is a gigantic penalty missing on Cuadrado, in Milan-Chelsea the red for Tomori is automatic in case of the sanction, but I really cannot see that as a penalty.”

Cuadrado seemed to be barged over in the box by Pierre Cornud, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.

At San Siro, Tomori twice put a hand on the shoulder of Mason Mount as he was running towards goal.

The referee opted for a penalty and a red card for stopping a clear scoring opportunity, as by not making a tackle, he was not trying to play the ball.

However, it is also fair to say the ‘tug’ was extremely soft, and Marelli argued it should therefore not have been a penalty at all.
