The ball hit Antonio Rudiger on the arm as an assist for Trevor Chalobah, but this season’s handball rules mean Chelsea’s goal against Juventus was not disallowed.

Last season, the rules stated that any touch of the arm from an attacking player in the build-up to a goal was automatically cause to disallow it, whether it was considered to be intentional or not.

That was changed by IFAB this summer, so that is now only true if the player who scores does so with an arm.

Otherwise, intentionality is to be ascertained in the usual way.

In this case, Adrien Rabiot flicked the ball onto Rudiger’s arm from point-blank range.

The former Roma defender also had his arm across his chest, so arguably if the ball had not struck him on the hand, it would’ve hit his torso anyway.

  1. Biggest joke , watch them reverse this sickening change . You can’t tell me a god damn hand ball directed to his team mate isn’t an automatic foul ….. disgraceful

  2. Pure horrible, from midfield to attack pure horrible.2 shots on target for 95min.there is no positive future with the team and allegri

  3. A million thanks to football Italia for that handball clarity. Juventus was simply no match for the Blues tonight. Their game plan failed immediately after Chelsea scored the second goal. They came to London with the same plan they had in Turin, play defensively with ten men behind the ball, and hit Chelsea on the counter… Blue is simply the colour

  4. It does not matter about the handball. Juventus were just shambolic. No life, no fight and no resolve. Allegri needs to go into ritiro and attend a seminar for clueless coaches.

  5. might have been a bad dispkay but that rule makes no sense at all. If a ball os handed before a goal play stops, same as a build up to the goal if a foul was done in the build uo the goal is disallowed.

This rule seems to be a loop hole for certain calls for certain teams.

  6. The only Italian team (seemingly) to reach the next round was beaten mercilessly today! The Nazionale needs a miracle to reach Qatar. The state of the Italian football is sad and a new Renaissance is badly needed!

  7. It was 100% handball. Without the ball hitting his hand and then his other arm, it would’ve never deflected to chalobah. BUT. This issue would’ve been relevant had Juventus gone down fighting 1-0. The second goal – pfff the shot goes right thru wojcech. the third goal is weakness in a tackle on the part of a massively overrated de ligt.

Wojcech has a mistake in him nearly every game, but if it wasn’t for him, it could’ve been much much worse.

  8. ‘This rule seems to be a loop hole for certain calls for certain teams.’ – Seems pretty rich coming from a Juve fan, Mike Town.

I don’t understand people saying this rule doesn’t make sense – it’s basically the same as for penalties – if his hand was in an unnatural position it would have been ruled out, but his arm tucked in across his body is literally the best place he can put it.
