There was a great deal of controversy around an early decision at San Siro, which saw Fikayo Tomori sent off and a penalty awarded to Chelsea.

It is now very rare to see both a dismissal and penalty, considered to be ‘Double Jeopardy’, unless it is also a clear goal-scoring opportunity and there was no attempt to play the ball.

The referee watched Tomori twice touch Mason Mount on the shoulder as the England international was running at goal and preparing to shoot.

It was a very harsh decision to give both the spot-kick and the red card, especially as the foul itself seemed very light indeed.

VAR did not intervene because it did not quality as a clear and obvious error, but also as the referee was in the perfect position to judge the situation and the severity of the challenge himself.

  1. Same happened to Milan last year with a straight red to Kessie early in a game. Team does not learn. Why was Tomori grabbing him? Oh yes he felt bad about his bad first game against his former team so he wanted to make up for it and does even worse. No one to blame but himself not the ref.

  2. Donato totaro,I am not so sure u watched the match or u understand football ,there will always be a contact, there is no defender in the football world that will not touched a player,it’s so obvious here that the referee is not qualify to whistle that match or whistle any champions league,Europa league or even conference league match,I no for sure that ,that is going to be the last match for the referee, though I am not surprised,it’s a normal thing that FIFA does to Milan in the champions league

  3. whether it was a penalty or not, for sure the tomori of this year is not the tomori of the last year …… wonder why. Is milan’s midfield the reason for this since it does not offer a sufficiently strong filter in the centre of the field?

  4. A very very soft penalty, Mount gave only the slightest of appeals. You could see he was surprised when it was awarded.
