Roma have reportedly targeted Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen as the ideal replacement should Chris Smalling return to Manchester United.

The Giallorossi have reportedly been trying to secure a permanent deal with the former England international Smalling, who has been excellent at the Olimpico this term.

But the reports in England have claimed Smalling could return to Old Trafford this summer and sporting director Gianluca Petrachi has therefore prepared a back-up plan, according to Daily Mail, involving Spurs defender Vertonghen.

But the reports in England have claimed Smalling could return to Old Trafford this summer and sporting director Gianluca Petrachi has therefore prepared a back-up plan, according to Daily Mail, involving Spurs defender Vertonghen.

The Belgium international has yet to extend his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the 32-year-old will be able to move on a free transfer this summer.

But the Giallorossi will have competition for Vertonghen’s signature, as a host of clubs have been linked with the player, and the Corriere dello Sport claims Petrachi will prioritise a possible deal with United to keep Smalling.
