“We are not going through a good period of form, but our objective was Serie A safety and so far we are in that position,” the veteran striker told the Corriere dello Sport.

“We are coming off some bad defeats and bad performances. Roma are struggling too, but they have so many champions in the squad that can turn a game. It’ll be tough.

“The fans let us know that they will always support us, no matter what. We know what we have to do and prepared well for this match.”

Aged 37, Toni does not shy away from responsibility in the Hellas Verona locker room.

“Am I a leader? I have a great deal of experience, played at a high level and I like giving advice to the group. We hope to soon get back to good results.”
